Is it too late to send a DV letter?

I've done a teeny bit of research in this matter but forgive me for being generally uneducated about this.

I received some threatening calls from a law firm about a debt that is from a bank in North Carolina in 2009. They called my employer (!) and also threw around "garnish wages" and "summons to court". Obviously that would scare most, I understand that's the tactic. So I have apparently agreed to make payments toward a lesser amount, but I didn't know to ask for a verification of debt before I agreed to this. My light bit of research seems to point to i should have done this before even answering another phone call. This has prompted me to get my credit reports and I can't seem to find anything on them that reflects this particular debt.

We are interested in paying everyone what we owe them, we just aren't in a position to pay anybody anything more than what we're trying to do right now. This old debt is very far down the list of things that I'm thinking about paying currently. and I was just wondering if there was an easier way to get them off our back for a bit longer.

To make it even more complex, the debt is from North Carolina, I was previously living in Colorado (where the lawyer is calling from) and I am currently living in Pennsylvania.

Welcome to the forums!!!
Ask them to validate the debt in writing via certified mail with a return receipt request immediately. If they don’t give any valid proof, then forward them a Cease and Desist letter. Don’t make any payments without a valid document.
