Subject: Retrieving account numbers not fully listed on credit report

Posted on Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:15 am

As in how do I do it? I need to dispute a few accounts I just discovered on my credit report, and the account numbers listed from the collection agencies are either partials, or completely X'd out.

How do I obtain them without hopefully offering my ssn, or otherwise, acknowledging/reseting these supposed "debts" to the agencies?

Thanks!

You can go on the credit reporting agency websites and file disputes, they will already have your ssn so you would not be giving them anything that they don't already have.

You can send a copy of the credit report along with a debt validation letter to the collection agency or the creditor whose name you find in your report. Since the credit report do not mention your social security number, it will be kept secret. Now, the CAs need to reply to the debt validation letter within 30 days from the date of receipt of your letter else they cannot proceed any more towards collecting the debt. Credit report contains your name and your address from which they can retrieve the information.

If you do not want to disclose the social security number, you can send a letter to the bureaus disputing the listings in the credit report and ask them to provide the details of the account numbers with the creditors whose name is listed in your credit report. As per the Fair credit reporting act, the creditor must provide you with complete details regarding the account numbers they have listed in your credit report. Alternatively you can also follow the steps as Carol said.

We can not give you account numbers here at the credit magic forum. You may have reached us in error. You can refer to the above posts if you are looking to get account numbers you need.

The question here is how to get the account numbers. The 3 major credit bureaus only show partials, TrueCredit only gives you partials and the collection letters from creditors only show the in-house account numbers. Again, how can a citizen obtain the actual account numbers to those accounts?

As far as I know they do every ones like that I know mine are listed the same way. But when you call the credit agencies they only ask for like the first four numbers and then they know what account you are referring to.

It is in your best interests not to dispute online. Send a letter to each of the credit agencies with the item you are disputing along with the partial account number. The CRA should be able to figure out which entries you are referring to. And you don't need to go into alot of detail or quote the FCRA (they already know the law). Simply state that you are disputing these entries and ask them to delete if the entries can not be verified.

The only reason you need the complete account number is if you are an identity thief and you fraudulently obtained a copy of someone's credit report and are now trying to make illegal charges using that account number. That is why the account numbers are not listed in full on the credit report. In my case, someone got my social and DOB and created a user account at Experian, got a copy of my report, and then went to town since they now had a copy of my credit report. Thank God the full account numbers are not listed or they could have tried using my existing accounts.

There really should be a federal law requiring the CRAs to notify us by text or phone whenever an inquiry or new account occurs. I have that now for the next 7 years but only because I filed the police report and as an identity theft victim you get that automatic.....why is is not like that in the first place?

The guy simply wants his FULL account numbers, as do I. I need a secondary company to consolidate a TON of school loans. In order to accomplish this, I need FULL account numbers. I am so SHOCKED at the ppl here that do not grasp that.

How about me filing bankruptcy and I need my full account numbers? No ID thief wants anything on my report, and the vast majority of those accounts couldn't have anything charged to them even if I had any credit available, since most of them are collections. Sorry Tom M, but not everyone who wants this information is out to get somebody else.

I'm with Alan and Cat...I'm trying to access an old account in order to close it, but threw out the actual paperwork with my name on it years ago. The company can't work with the first four numbers of my account.

Im with Alan how does nobody here understand what the guy is asking, he's not asking for ss#, he's not asking about cc#. He's simply asking that when a collector starts an account to get your money they assign you an acct # (ex. 12345XXXXX) we need to know how to retain the entire number to dispute, track, or validate the account do we call the collector and ask them, because no one here seems to know, let alone know the question that is being asked?

Call up the creditor. Ask them. That's what I did when I needed my full account numbers. It only takes a couple minutes. If you don't have the phone number on the account, use the creditor's name at registeredagentinfo.com to find the contact info.

Tom. I'M not a criminal but I am a victim of identity theft. I want the full account numbers as well so that I can contact the CA's directly. They always ask for my SS#/Full name etc.. to verify my account when I don't have the account #. I don't want to give them info they don't have just so they can now verify it and I'm stuck with an account that does not belong to me.
