was informed I have charge off asked for verification and they just said it was for a certain account and they want it paid..how do I handle..said it was for $15,000, original co 7,000. I want to verify but they have not sent me anything. I do not recall the credit but want to verify it myself.
What exactly am I to do..or can do.

Hi patmunger,

You have mentioned that you were informed about the charge-off. So, I am assuming that you don't check your credit report regularly. However, I should mention that it is very very important to check your credit report a couple of times a year.

Check from your credit report under which collection agency is this debt listed? Send a debt validation letter through certified mail requesting a return receipt (CMRRR). You will get to know from the validation the outstanding debt amount.

If you have proof of the actual amount that you owe, copy of the original contract, and last payment receipt, you can try to dispute the amount reported.

Thanks,

Aaron

they can't verify over the phone. Send the DV letter and they won"t be able to call you until they send proof.

What state do you live in?
how old is this debt?
who is the original creditor?
Is the negative tradeline a Collection Agency or the Original Creditor?
