Leaving Uk, Can they chase me up for debt owed?

I have racked up about £1300 worth of debt at Littlewoods and V12 finance. I am leaving the UK to go to my home country very soon. Only my bank has my home country address details. I don't owe my bank any money. I will also close my bank account before I leave.

Can they chase me up in my home country for the debt owed?

Hi Sarah
If you plan to return to UK again, you should try and pay off all the debts, else the creditors can sue you for the debt whenever you return back to UK. Now, since you have already agreed to debt settlement plan, I think that you should pay off the debt as agreed between you and the creditor.

why is it that when a company bankrupts people think no big deal and that some business succeed and others fail, yet when a personal bankrupts there is a stigma and people say things like you need to pay your debts or do the honorable thing?

if you can pay and are using bankruptcy to increase your net worth then you could get in trouble legally, but if you cannot make your payments then don't pay.

People have souls, corporations don't; so don't feel bad about it for one minute.

My wife is from sweden but we both lived in the UK at one time. After we left the UK, we used her card at a foreign ATM. She knew she had roughly 50 pounds in the bank, and so she withdrew it. The problem lied in the fact that the ATM fee was 2 pounds and made her account overdraft by 7 pence (as her balance was 51.93). 7 pence! As we had moved, and thought her account was fine, we never closed it, as it is good to have a UK bank account. 12 months later when she was visiting her old roomates, who were still living at the same address, she is confronted with piles of letters which explained that interest had been applied onto the 10 pence. which has now totalled some 300 pounds. Should we pay it considering it is unjust interest? I think it is crap.

Hi Saki,

In U.S. if you leave the country with debt, the debt may not follow you to the other country. But the debt tolls, and when you come back the Statute of Limitations on the debt restarts. However, this has nothing to do with the visa, and you can't be taken to jail for debt.

Thanks,

Aaron
