I have multiple accounts on "charge-off" on my credit report. I am hoping to become a firefighter but one requirement is to have a good credit history. How can I put these accounts back on good standing. I was reading into a couple of options such as "payment for deletion" but it seems like it doesnt work all the time. I have also read something about reinstating the accounts. Any help on what to do?

Usually negative items will remain on your credit report for the next 7 years. Charge-off account is treated as a negative item. Negative item hurts your credit score adversely. So, at first you will have to try to wipe out the negative items from your credit report. You can contact with your original creditors and negotiate with them. You may try to arrange a better repayment plan with them. If they agree with your proposal, then you may make a written request to them to update your account status as “Settled Charge-off” and remove the negative listings from your credit report after repaying the debt. But, it depends on their discretion whether or not to accept your request.

I'm sorry let me correct myself, i should have proof read my last posting before actually posting....

I meant to say.... I dont mind the listing staying on my report, what i would like to know is what account status would look better for a potential employer on my report other than "charge-off"
