The collection agency has contacted my employment looking for me. They also contacted my family members trying to get info from them. They told another co-worked of mine that they are sending this "issue" to my payroll.
I am not sure what to do first, should I contact a credit care company to get a payment process going or should I contact my original Sallie Mae creditor..

I do want to make payments now...as much as I can afford
Thank you.

Hi Guest,

No collection agency is allowed to harass any debtor for collecting money under the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act). The first thing you should do, is to write a request letter to the agency asking them to stop harassing you. Here you can find a sample cease and desist letter which you can follow.

However, if you are planning to pay some amount of the debt, then I believe it is better to contact the original creditor and talk about a repayment plan. You must let the CA know that you are interested to negotiate with the creditor and not them. If they still persist then you must file a complaint against the collection agency (CA) to FTC and your State Attorney General. The State Attorney General’s office is going to help you with the process.

Hey Guest,

The collection agency cannot garnish your wages till it gets a judgment from the court. Hence, before they can get a judgment, I think you need to negotiate with the original creditor regarding a repayment plan. You can either seek help from a credit care company or do it by yourself. Just see that you are able to convince them with your new payment plan.
