I want to repair my credit score. Due to a past hardship, settlement on accounts were made. There is also a court judgment, that I have been paying on for over a year. My mortgage was just paid in full and there are no other credit card debts. My partner has excellent credit. I would like to know if I can get added to his card to start building. Will it put him in any danger to his credit? If so, then what is the best way to proceed to build my backup?

No, it should not affect his credit.

tell us about your credit.

Hi Veronica,

You can work on your payments first of all to improve your score. Start paying off all those accounts on which you have been delinquent upon. If there are any cards which you have not used for days, you can use that to make small purchases, and then make on-time payments on these.

You can also try to take a secured credit card to improve your credit. Secured cards are easy to get, even if you have low score. You can make small purchases using this card, and then make on-time payments on these. Your payment history plays a very important part in rebuilding your credit score.

You should also check the status of all the accounts on your credit report. Check if the status of all the accounts are updated. If there are any wrong listings, you can dispute those with the credit bureaus.

Can you give more details on the judgment? Was the judgment amount paid? If yes, then check if the status of that account is showing as "Paid judgment". If not, you can dispute this.

All these together will improve your credit score. To improve your score you need not get added as authorized user on your partners' accounts. However, if you get added as the authorized user, his credit won't get affected.

Thanks,

Aaron
