CBNA shows up on your credit report – What should you do?

CBNA (Credit Bureau of North America, LLC) is a collection agency headquartered in Tennessee, USA. Though it has an A rating from the BBB, it's not a BBB (Better Business Bureau) accredited business. The acronym (CBNA) may also stand for Citibank North America. Read on to know what you should do when you're contacted by Credit Bureau of North America or Citibank North America.

What should you do if it's an old debt you haven't paid off?

If the collection agency (CA) or the bank is contacting you about an old debt, you should first check whether or not the Statute of Limitations (SOL) on that debt has expired. If it has expired, then the creditor or the CA cannot file a lawsuit against you to collect the unpaid amount. However, the creditor or CA may still use other out-of-court means to collect on the debt.

Before you make any payments to CBNA, you should negotiate with them to settle your debts if your financial situation doesn't permit you to repay the outstanding balance in full. Whatever option you choose, it is advisable that you negotiate a "Pay for delete" agreement. This means that the creditor/collection agency will remove all information on this account from your credit report(s) once you settle or pay off the debt in full. If the CA or the creditor doesn't agree to one, then at least try and negotiate for a "Settled as agreed" status on your credit report.

What if you've paid off the debt but it shows up on your report?

If you've paid off the debt but it's not reflected on your credit report as "Paid", then you should dispute it with Citibank North America or Credit Bureau of North America, LLC. You should send a dispute letter to the credit bureau asking them to correct the inaccurate listing. Or, you can contact the creditor or collection agency and ask them to co-ordinate with the bureaus on your behalf. The account should appear as "Paid" on your credit report.

What should you do if you don't owe the debt at all?

If you don't owe the debt and a collection agency is attempting to collect on it, then you should ask them to validate the debt. To do so, you should send a debt validation letter to the CA via fax or certified mail. However, if you're trying to deal with the creditor, then you must ask them to verify your account.

Sometimes you may find a listing on your credit report from a creditor when you don't have an account with them. In this situation, you need to dispute the account with the CA/creditor or the credit bureaus to get the incorrect item deleted from your credit reports.

How can you contact Credit Bureau of North America, LLC?

Credit Bureau of North America's contact information is:

It is better you contact the First Savings Mortgage Corporation regarding this matter. This community offers credit solutions to the people. So, I don't think that the community has obtained a copy of your credit report.

Hey Carol, thanks for the great info. I just obtained a copy of my credit report and noticed that my 2nd mortgage loan didn't enter into the foreclosure along with the first mortgage.
I bought my condo back in 10/2005 and was foreclosed and resold on 04/2008. I had an 80/20 loan and my understanding was that both loans would be merged into the foreclosure process. The second loan was a line of credit, that I never touched, issued by Citibank. Now, I realized they've been trying to collect and my credit is ruined as a result. Do u have any advice for me? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you SO much!

Maggie

Well, you don't have several options in your hand right now. You've to pay off your second mortgage as soon as possible. The loan didn't enter into the foreclosure process. You're still liable for the loan and you need to pay it off.

Home Depot recently ask me if I wanted to open an account with them because I was buying something and didn't have a Credit Card with them and I said ok. I got the Credit Card the other day but now this THD/CBNA shows up on my Credit Report, it shows $0 but why does it show up at all and after reading about the trouble others have had with this place, I'm afraid that I will have a problem. What can I do, should I close the Credit Card they sent or what?

H Carol,

I'm in the middle of my refinance. The bank is inquiring about CBNA, Credit Plus Residential Finance. I am trying to figure out if that is citi bank looking into my credit, since I was opening a credit card to transfer my balances or i tried to refinance with wells fargo over a month ago & thought that maybe it was them? Can you help & point me in the right direction? Thanks!

yes I would like a letter fax over to239-656-8289 stating that this account is closed and paid in full. A letter was to be mailed but no one ever did it. And I must have this cleared as soon as possible. A faxed letter would be plenty for what I need. All I have is the last for numbers 3049?

What is the best way to close joint checking accounts so our credit scores don't suffer when u have been divorced for 15 yrs and although the husband was designated as the person to pay the balances on these cards he did not do so but has been mostly current on paying and he is now in a position to pay off the balances . Many of these accounts are over 20 years old.

I have been informed by FBCS Inc, which also goes under the name of Federal Bond, that I am a vitcim of idenity theft. They had contacted me to collect a debt which Icould prove was not mine. I pulled my three credit reports and all looks fine excpet for some Inquiries. One is with CBNA through Equifax, since Exqifax makes it impossible to contact them I cannot clear this issue up. I was able to talk with Transunion on the phone to find out how to clear up the Inquiries that are on their report.

Hi

I just looked at the inquiries on my credit report and CBNA is showing up several times. I dont have any accounts with CBNA or entries on my credit report they are just listed several times in my inquiry column. Have their inquiry's lowered my score? The last time I see that they inquiried was June 24, 2013. I dont have any negative information in my file from any creditor at all- so I dont know why they would be inquiring about me.

Thanks!
Becky
