Justin is right. But as far as I know, there are certain states in US like California where judgments can stay for ten years. In California, the creditor also has the right to renew the judgment for another ten years and so your judgment may stay in your report for 20 years and this extension of ten years can be done repeatedly by your creditor.

As far as I know, judgments against you can not only garnish your wages but can also take your home away from you. If happens mostly when you have missed mortgage payments and your creditor sues you to the court for foreclosure of your property. However, your property can be taken only if it is in your name. If the home is in the name of other family members they cannot take the property.
