A collection agency called me for a debt of $30 which I do not acknowledge. It is a small amount, so I decided to pay. I sent them a PFD, stating if they agreed to report to the all the credit bureaus and delete it, I would pay. It is almost 30 days and I haven't heard from them. Should I dispute the debt wait for them to reply?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Paul,

Since you do not acknowledge the debt as yours, I would suggest, you send a debt validation letter to the the collection agency. You will find a sample debt validation letter in the Letters of Credit section. Send the letter through certified mail, with a return receipt requested. You must retain copies of the DV letter. The CA should validate the debt within 30 days, after receiving your DV letter.

If you do not receive any reply within 30 days, you should dispute directly with the credit bureaus. Enclose a copy of the DV letter and the receipt as proof, that the CA has not been able to validate the debt. The credit bureaus will investigate and correct the errors on your credit report. You are also entitled to get a free copy of your credit report, after it has been corrected and updated.
