I am new to this forum. I was surprised to get my credit card bills for the last month. The due amount is much more than I expected. I called up the customer service and they said I went over the limit. But I had the idea they would inform if I exceeded the limit. Is it legal since they allowed me to go over the limit? Do you have some letters to send to get the extra charges waived? Should I tell them I am canceling the card?

Hi Mankjn,

Not all credit card(CC) companies inform, if you go over the limit. Whether the CC company will waive off the penalty charges, depends upon them. But you can try taking the following steps:

1) If this is the first time you have gone over the limit, you can request the company's manager to waive the fees charged, out of goodwill.
2) You can just give them a hint that you are planning to cancel the card after the balance is paid off.

If you have been a good customer, the CC company may agree to waive the fines. To avoid going over the limit, you can place e-mail alerts. By doing this you will know when you get closer to your credit limit. If you are not in the habit of carrying balances on your card, you can get the credit limit increased by your CC company.
