Collection calls for stolen identity - what to do?

I became a victim of identity theft in 2006. Thankfully the thief opened only one account under my name. After the bills of $4520 were sent to me I filed a police complaint and reported to the bureaus. They deleted the debt and placed a fraud alert.

But after 6 months from this incident I started getting collection calls that have continued till date. I have explained hundreds of times that I do not owe any money. Every time they call they have a new and increased amount they want to collect. I am tired handling it. Collection calls have become a nightmare. Can anybody help me get out of this?

Hi Paul,

Send a "Cease and Desist Letter" to the collection agency. Perhaps this will stop them from contacting you. In case the CA goes to the extent of filing a lawsuit for non-payment of debt, you can respond by producing written proof to support your viewpoint.

According to the FDCPA laws, you can demand $1000 plus the court fees from the collection agency (in case you win the lawsuit).

If you require a sample "Cease and Desist Letter", you will find one in the Letters of Credit section.
