After legal mediation in NJ for the thousands my sister's ex owed her, he agreed to refinance the private student loan that he forced her into co-signing in order to avoid litigation. He then disappeared and has not been seen since (even by his lawyer.) He then defaulted on his first payment in Dec 2005. Sallie Mae assisted her by "charging off the debt" which has impacted her credit-she pays all of her bills on time. She said it doesn't matter since she will wait until the charge off can be removed-but is there anything you can suggest out there to help get her? She and her husband are planning for a baby and it would be nice to have this final link to the past behind them Thanks.

Usually negative items will remain on your sister’s credit report for 7 years from the date of her first default. So she will have to wait for that time period to remove that item from your credit report.
