I got a call from 877-209-5454 saying they are filing a complaint in my county about a payday loan I supposedly took out 3 years ago. They had my SSN, address, employment info etc, and said if I don't call them with my checking acct number by tomorrow morning to set up $1000 in payments, a sheriff will serve me a summons at home or work. Are they really capable of filing with the court and all that?

that is a bottomfeeding scam.they got your info from an illegal lender.nobody serves at work.it is a threat that scams like to use to scare people.file a police report using that number, and any name of the place.if they gave no name then just use the number.just don't call back,or think about paying this scam.got it?report and ignore.

You did not mention the state you reside in and the name of your payday lender. What if your state allows payday lending and the lender is a licensed one, then such a person can sue you for defaulting on the loan. So, check out whether or not payday lending is legal in your state and if yes, then is the lender licensed to operate there. This is because if the lender is a licensed one and that payday lending is allowed in your state, then you'll have to repay both the principle as well as the interest.

This is a complete BS. They are just trying to scare you. Don’t share any personal information with them. File a complaint against them to the SAG or FTC immediately.
