Question on a blank balance on my credit score

Submitted by SamGurl on Sun, 03/28/2010 - 15:41

So I pulled my report today and I have more than one under the Adverse Accounts section where the Balance field is blank. It doesn't even say $0, it's just blank. What does that mean and what do I do from here? There are notes, for example one says ">Maximum delinquency of 120+ days in 09/2006 for $95<". What the heck does that mean?
I think this is part of an old student loan. I've been dealing with these old loans still because I had a serious hardship and ended up defaulting on them. Well they were then broken up and sold to 5 or 6 collectors for very odd amounts. And my total loans weren't that much. Under $6000.

Where do I go from here to either get this paid or get it off my report?

Thanks so much!!
Sarah

Hi SamGurl,

What you can do is call the creditor and inquire into this. Request them to provide you a copy of the account details and the statement regarding how much you owe. You can then send this copy to the credit bureaus and request them to update the account on your report.

However, if the account is now held by a collection agency, you can send them a debt validation letter through certified mail, requesting a return receipt (CMRRR). If the agency mails you the answer letter, you will come to know the balance. You will also come to know whether or not it is a student loan that you owe. You will get a sample debt validation letter at http://www.creditmagic.org/repair/sampleletter-debtvalidation.html .

Hope this helps.

Aaron
