Who should i pay, the creditor or collection agency?

My wife closed her AT&T account but forgot to pay the final closing fee bill, despite repeated reminder emails (getting married can be quiet hectic) When we finally got round to calling AT&T, they informed us that the account went into collections (Collection Company Of America) a month ago. They claim to have sent a final warning letter to an old mailing address which we didn't get.
my question:
should we pay AT&T, or the collection agency? and is there a recommended method to doing it?

Hi Simon,

Welcome to this community :)

As the account is now with the collection agency, you need to forward the payment towards the collection agency. However, if you don't want to deal with the collection agency, you can request the original creditor to pull back the account from the collection agency. If the original creditor complies to your request, you can then make the payment to the creditor.

However, to whomever you make the payments, before starting to make the payments request the creditor or collection agency to agree to a "Pay for delete" (PFD) agreement. You can send a PFD letter to the creditor or collection agency, to whomever you are going to make the payments. Send the letter through certified mail, requesting a return receipt. With the PFD your account will get reported as "Paid", and all the negatives n that account will get removed.

Hi,

As far as I understand you won't get any negative reports from collection agency if the creditor pulls back the account from the collection agency.

Wow, it is really great that AT&T agreed to do that. You may want to have conversation with them about the potential negative report for the collection agency since they have been so cooperative so far. I would also contact the collection agency and let them know that you have an agreement with AT&T, so there is no need for their involvement.

If it would happen to show up on your credit report then a dispute should take care of it.
