I received a collection letter for a 15 year old credit card debt that is not on my credit report. The collection agency is offering a settlement. What should I do?

If an unpaid (original) account was sold to a collection agency, is it possible to remove the original account off of my credit, since it's now showing that it's in collections?

Since paying off my debt my score has gone from 634 to 684. What other actions can I take to get my score to 700+? Other than staying on time with payments and being responsible? Please any suggestions would be appreciated.
