My wife got a call from a collection agency a few days back. My wife doesn’t know anything about this debt. She has absolutely no clue about it. I checked her credit report and found that the debt has not been mentioned there. The debt collector was very rude. He claimed that the debt was listed on her credit report. The alleged debt amount is $7000. What should my wife do? The collector is threatening to go to police.

My question involves collection proceedings in California. I have credit card debt with various banks and I haven't been able to pay them in 6-7 months. Most debts are still held in house, some have been charged off and assigned to other law groups and collection agencies. Do I have any time without making payments before they actually do asset searches and take legal action?
