My nephew is going through severe debt problems. I have agreed to pay off his credit card debt. The original creditor says that he has assigned the account to a debt collection agency. However, the debt collection agency is saying that they have assigned/sold the account to a law firm. Now, I’m utterly confused. Whom should I pay and how much?

Canceling card is bad for rating

I want to cancel a credit card because I just don't need this many. I was told that canceling a card is bad for your rating. I got a letter from the card company and if I refuse to accept the new high rates, I can't make any new purchases again. I don't owe them or anyone else any money. Will they cancel the card automatically if I refuse the new terms? What is the best way to get rid of this card without negatively affecting my credit rating?

I sent a letter disputing a debt to the collection agency within 30 days. I received a letter in the mail yesterday 4/28/2013 dated 4/23/2013 with a copy of bill showing a previous balance from the Original creditor. It was for wireless phone service. I have receipt for payment on December 1, 2008 which is prior to what is covered by the bill copy. At the time of payment I also asked that my line of service be terminated as I was moving to China. I don't have a receipt/confirmation showing I asked it to be terminated.
