CBNA shows up on your credit report – What should you do?

CBNA (Credit Bureau of North America, LLC) is a collection agency headquartered in Tennessee, USA. Though it has an A rating from the BBB, it's not a BBB (Better Business Bureau) accredited business. The acronym (CBNA) may also stand for Citibank North America. Read on to know what you should do when you're contacted by Credit Bureau of North America or Citibank North America.

What should you do if it's an old debt you haven't paid off?

If the collection agency (CA) or the bank is contacting you about an old debt, you should first check whether or not the Statute of Limitations (SOL) on that debt has expired. If it has expired, then the creditor or the CA cannot file a lawsuit against you to collect the unpaid amount. However, the creditor or CA may still use other out-of-court means to collect on the debt.

Before you make any payments to CBNA, you should negotiate with them to settle your debts if your financial situation doesn't permit you to repay the outstanding balance in full. Whatever option you choose, it is advisable that you negotiate a "Pay for delete" agreement. This means that the creditor/collection agency will remove all information on this account from your credit report(s) once you settle or pay off the debt in full. If the CA or the creditor doesn't agree to one, then at least try and negotiate for a "Settled as agreed" status on your credit report.

What if you've paid off the debt but it shows up on your report?

If you've paid off the debt but it's not reflected on your credit report as "Paid", then you should dispute it with Citibank North America or Credit Bureau of North America, LLC. You should send a dispute letter to the credit bureau asking them to correct the inaccurate listing. Or, you can contact the creditor or collection agency and ask them to co-ordinate with the bureaus on your behalf. The account should appear as "Paid" on your credit report.

What should you do if you don't owe the debt at all?

If you don't owe the debt and a collection agency is attempting to collect on it, then you should ask them to validate the debt. To do so, you should send a debt validation letter to the CA via fax or certified mail. However, if you're trying to deal with the creditor, then you must ask them to verify your account.

Sometimes you may find a listing on your credit report from a creditor when you don't have an account with them. In this situation, you need to dispute the account with the CA/creditor or the credit bureaus to get the incorrect item deleted from your credit reports.

How can you contact Credit Bureau of North America, LLC?

Credit Bureau of North America's contact information is:

200 Creekside Dr.
Dickson, TN 37055

Phone No. - (615) 446-7128

We just refinanced our home with Tenacity Mortgage in Nov 2011. We also borrowed enough to do some remodeling; the company cut the checks to all our outstanding bills. I was responsible for mailing these checks. One was to a company I had already paid off and the other is supposed to be in the same situation. It is made out to CBNA. I have no idea who this is and have received no bills for the money amount. Can you give me any help? I will wait if you have any more info you may need? Obviously I cannot cash the check since it is not made out to me. Tenacity needs a fax or written proof that I do not owe CBNA any money.

I am in the same boat as everyone else here. I had a Sears account and *paid it in full* from the sale of my house, back in 2007. I was near perfect credit until this SEARS/CBNA magically showed up as unpaid on my report this month. I have been monitoring my credit monthly for five years straight and the Sears account always appeared as it should--Paid in full 9/2007. Now, I have NO IDEA why this is here suddenly and need help in getting some help on correcting this. STEPS TAKEN SO FAR: I already started a dispute on Equifax (still awaiting update) and requested a fraud alert on file with all three credit Bureaus but is there anything else to be done to remove the negative mark?

NEW UPDATE!!

CBNA-Sears Credit Card Services General Number: 1-800-917-7700

(2/2/12, 1:02pm.) I called the number above and used the Sears automated system. The system found me and reported that the old account had a zero balance---as it should. I opted to speak to Customer Service and spoke with a Miss. Jakki, who told me that my old Sears account was reported to the three credit bureaus, back on Sept 13th 2007, as Closed - Paid in Full

Miss. Jakki said that she will also request that the Sears Credit Bureau Department send this information to the credit bureaus to correct any misinformation. I also requested a copy of the letter to be sent to my attention as well since my mailing address was still in their system. She went on to say that CitiBank/CitiGroup services their cards and maybe during the transition of data at that time, something happened but Miss Jakki could not verify/confirm anything and was just wondering as I was as to why this happened.
~Hope this information helps someone else!

I opened a Home Depot credit card in 4/2005, I also paid it off that year. There has been a $0 balance since 9/2005. No one says I owe money, but I want to close the account. Do I contact Sioux Falls or CBNA in Texas. On my credit report the account is listed as EXPO/CNBA.

Thanks for your help.

The status on all three credit scores shows this card as current yet I canceled it in 1995.... I've called CitiBank and they say the card doesn't show up. I've called radio shack and they don't have any phone number listed. They said the phone number is on the back on the card which I don't have.I only see a PO box # in Rapid City SD. Is this my only way out.

Hello,

What is the statute of limitations on credit debt? There is an entry on my report from CBNA dated in 2004. I don't want to call them yet and start a collection process since the balance is less than $500 plus I want to protect my credit score. The debt does show open.

As part of the military we are required to hold a govt issued credit card, which used to be citibank. We are required to use it for all official travel, even on deployment. If you are away, and the bill comes due, there is often lag time between when you submit a travel claim and the government pays you, and the amounts can be quite significant, for instance international air travel, food, lodging and other expenses. So now I have a 60 day delinquency from 6 years ago from the above scenario. Since the Government no longer uses citibank, the account also shows as being terminated by the creditor, and shows up on at least one of my reports. Any thoughts on how to deal with this?
Thanks!

Just requested a credit report. The credit score from Equifax was substanchely lower than the other credit reporting bureau on the following account Sears/CBNA # 50499410****:
Condition: Derogatory and the other reports - Paid
Type: Collection and the other reporting agency stating- Credit Card.
Pay Status: Late 120 days and the other reported - Current
Past Due: $0 and the other agreed - $0
Opened: 06/01/2006 and the other agreed - 06/01/2006
Reported: 03/01/2012 and the other - 04/09/2011( which is about the date this account was paid off.

My question is: With these discrepences in the report, are these differences the reason for the Lower Score.

Hi,

I just got my credit report and I'm cleaning it up. I am having trouble deciphering something. My credit history is very good to excellent. I used to have a JJill credit card. While it was still active and in good standing, JJill converted to World Fin Cap bank. At that point I cancelled the card.

My credit reports are showing that card as closed, but they are all still showing the old card. One has it listed as Citibank, but Citibank no longer has any information on having a J Jill account.

Two have it DM Management/CBNA with no phone number and a PO Box in Sioux Falls, SD. It doesn't show that I am in debt or in bad standing, so I'm not sure what it means or how to get in touch with them? I cannot decipher this. Could this mean that CBNA took over the Citibank debt? Or JJill debt?

In any case, I'm trying to find the best way to get it off my reports.

It still shows that I have a remaining balance, and no further payments are showing up. There is not a phone number given to reach them. It just states the address of the company. Back in 2006 I had a credit card from THD/CBNA. THe last time I used it was according to all 3 Credit Bureaues was 11/11/2006. I destroyed the card and I continue with the "account in dispute" and it interfers whenever I make financial decisions that require review of credit status. How do I reach and/or handle getting rid of "account in dispute" from my credit report?

CBNA DOES NOT STAND FOR CREDIT BUREAU OF NORTH AMERICA, they have been out of business for over 2 years. If CBNA is coming up on your credit profile you need to google Citibank North America to obtain their phone number. The phone number 615 446 7128 and the fax number 615 446 2111 belongs to AWA Collections and we are not associated with Citibank of North America.
