CBNA shows up on your credit report – What should you do?

CBNA (Credit Bureau of North America, LLC) is a collection agency headquartered in Tennessee, USA. Though it has an A rating from the BBB, it's not a BBB (Better Business Bureau) accredited business. The acronym (CBNA) may also stand for Citibank North America. Read on to know what you should do when you're contacted by Credit Bureau of North America or Citibank North America.

What should you do if it's an old debt you haven't paid off?

If the collection agency (CA) or the bank is contacting you about an old debt, you should first check whether or not the Statute of Limitations (SOL) on that debt has expired. If it has expired, then the creditor or the CA cannot file a lawsuit against you to collect the unpaid amount. However, the creditor or CA may still use other out-of-court means to collect on the debt.

Before you make any payments to CBNA, you should negotiate with them to settle your debts if your financial situation doesn't permit you to repay the outstanding balance in full. Whatever option you choose, it is advisable that you negotiate a "Pay for delete" agreement. This means that the creditor/collection agency will remove all information on this account from your credit report(s) once you settle or pay off the debt in full. If the CA or the creditor doesn't agree to one, then at least try and negotiate for a "Settled as agreed" status on your credit report.

What if you've paid off the debt but it shows up on your report?

If you've paid off the debt but it's not reflected on your credit report as "Paid", then you should dispute it with Citibank North America or Credit Bureau of North America, LLC. You should send a dispute letter to the credit bureau asking them to correct the inaccurate listing. Or, you can contact the creditor or collection agency and ask them to co-ordinate with the bureaus on your behalf. The account should appear as "Paid" on your credit report.

What should you do if you don't owe the debt at all?

If you don't owe the debt and a collection agency is attempting to collect on it, then you should ask them to validate the debt. To do so, you should send a debt validation letter to the CA via fax or certified mail. However, if you're trying to deal with the creditor, then you must ask them to verify your account.

Sometimes you may find a listing on your credit report from a creditor when you don't have an account with them. In this situation, you need to dispute the account with the CA/creditor or the credit bureaus to get the incorrect item deleted from your credit reports.

How can you contact Credit Bureau of North America, LLC?

Credit Bureau of North America's contact information is:

Hello,

In 2010 I purchased appliances for a home remodel. I purchased under a 36 mo no interest plan. I setup my back to pay automatically. After 36 months I started to get calls from Best Buy. Well, it was actually Citi bank calling to collect as they service BB debt. The rep told me I had to pay $1,800.00 or else my balance would be charged something like $7,000.00 and it would be a negative on my credit report. I paid for fear of the unknown. I figured I could research this and resolve it. Wrong. After days of trying to understand, I found that they had signed me up for Account Shield Plus. A service which pays your monthly bills should you become unemployed. I never signed up for this service. I've spent the last 6 months trying to get this resolved. The original loan was with HSBC bank. They won't talk to me because the debt was moved to Citibank. Citi says they can only go back 2 years, thus can't substantiate that I signed up for this service. Account Shield Plus told me this had happened to a number of consumers and they would open an investigation. During this 6 week period of waiting for resolution, my account wouldn't be charged nor would it be reported delinquent. After the first 6 months, I called and was told that there had never been a claim, but the new guy would open a claim. Another 6 weeks later, Citi credited my account a few hundred dollars. I called and asked what this was about. I was told by a man that I had only disputed this amount, not the entire amount. Perplexed as to why he would think I'm calling to dispute a few hundred dollars of this $5,000 unauthorized charge, I asked him to start a new dispute. I had to hire an assistant to work on this for me at this point. She recently called Citi and was told that they wouldn't talk to me because there is a "cease and desist" on my account. Apparently when I asked them to stop harassing me with collections calls, they decided that they would teach me a lesson and not communicate with me at all.

Best Buy will not help me. They tell me I must speak to Citi. Citi won't speak to me now and they have sold my account to their own internal collections department. Of course, they will not speak to me. I had also been told by Citi several months ago to contact HSBI, but they told me that they don't own the account anymore, so they can't help me. I've filed disputed with the credit reporting agencies. Experian is the only one that has responded. The response is nearly impossible to read, namely because it contains no information. All it says is, "Updated. Consumer disagrees." I don't know what more they want- I've sent in examples of the class action lawsuit that BB lost. The case was in regards to, you guessed it- Account Shield Plus scams, either tricking people to sign up for it or simply signing people up without their knowledge. Here's a link to one of many of the lawsuits against best Buy: (no links allowed, but look it up) I'm at my wit's end. My credit is severely damaged, I'm trying to buy a rare home in a neighborhood that doesn't have many properties like this available. I'll probably lose the home because of Best Buy ruining my credit. I've spent well over 40 hours on this and just don't know what to do anymore. I suppose I must sue. But who? Agent for process?

I received notice that THD/CBNA inquired re my account. This account was paid off over year ago . Why would they be inquiring
about me if I did not apply for new credit?

Why would they be checking on a closed account that was handled
per agreement? I did not request credit for recent purchases.

Hello, I have an inquiry from CBNA on my credit report. To find out why they have checked my credit, I called the above number you provided it's no longer in service. I googled the CBNA and got these numbers. (615) 229-1038 / (866) 260-3631
I called the (866) 260-3631 number and it gave me a
(888) 397-3742 number to call if I had a question regarding credit issues. When I called the (888) 397-3742 it was answered bay EXPERIAN. Do you think CBNA is part of EXPERIAN. Thank you.

I have Credit Karma on my phone for a long time now. In 2013 I had Mortgage problems. It took a long time to build up my credit as in the past it use to be around 855. Since I have paid off around two or three credit cards and disposed of one I have been using my own cash to live on. Being a little short on cash one day I charged $64.00 to my Home Depot Card. At the time prior my credit score was 728. Today I find the charge from Home Depot on it with the Bank listing THD/CBNA and my score dropped to 721. I've already sent the money in 8/1/14 but I can't understand why there has been 7 points taken off my credit score. I was going to ask you what you thought but the only I thing I can do is discontinue my business with Home Depot and close my account like I had done with Discover Card.

Hopefully you can help me with this question that has been bugging me for years. The statue of limitation is the date from when is the SOL date? I hear that in CA collection agencies pass along debt accounts and each time someone buys the debt it starts the SOL. Is that true? I have a debt from college that is still following me around and they will not negotiate a pay for delete with me.

My 92 y.o. mother is applying for housing for seniors. The management received a credit report indicating charge accounts with Macy's, J.C.Penney and Community Bank all paid. Included is a charge account labeled "CBNA-BBY" indicating "paid out" $6,000 on 10-16-14. The facility says they cannot identify CBNA-BBY and the credit reporting agency is unable to specify also.
