I have a question, my husband does not have the besdt credit. He's trying to get it better. He is just recently getting letters on things that he never paid and have done into Collections. How long does this stay on your credit report? When we looked on his credit report these were not on there. All of the notices are things he didnt pay 5-10 yrs ago. Also is there a way to find out if he owes any more $ to companies that have gone into collections so we can straighten up his credit?
Thank you!

Hi florida82

Most unpaid collections stay on your report for 7 years and some stay for 10 years. Even if you pay them off it can stay on your report. You could try and negotiate with your creditors for a pay for delete and then the items will be removed from your reports.

Also is there a way to find out if he owes any more $ to companies that have gone into collections so we can straighten up his credit?

You could keep a check on your credit report regularly to see if your report is correct. If no, then you could dispute the wrong debts and pay off the correct debts to improve your score.
